How do I open a Health Savings Account (HSA)?

Updated this week

Overview

Once you have elected to enroll in an HSA via your employer, you will need to create your account by logging into your Benepass account and navigating to the HSA workspace.

Access this by selecting HSA at login or choosing it from the workspace selector in the upper left corner of your homepage.

Once you sign in to your HSA workspace for the first time, select "Start application" to begin the onboarding flow.

The onboarding process will then collect the necessary information to create the HSA, and you will also be asked to review the required consents from the bank.

After you complete the onboarding process, in most cases, your account will be created right away. If you have any outstanding deductions, funds will be added to your account within 2 business days.

In some cases, you may be required to submit additional documentation, which can be completed by logging into your HSA workspace and following the prompts on your account. Once you submit the necessary documentation, your account will be reviewed by the bank within 1 business day.

Additional information can be found here: Why am I being asked for additional documents?

What happens if I don't finish the onboarding process?

If you do not complete your HSA onboarding application within 90 days of Benepass receiving your election information, some employers may automatically close accounts that remain unopened after this period.

Any payroll deductions that were received but not processed should be returned to you through your employer’s payroll.

Can I reopen my HSA after it's been closed?

If your HSA was closed due to incomplete onboarding, you won’t be able to reopen it directly.

Please contact your employer or benefits administrator to review your options. In most cases, they can help reset your enrollment so you can complete onboarding.

When will I get my payroll deductions back?

If you do not complete your HSA account opening within the 90-day window, any payroll deductions that were not processed into your HSA should be returned to you through your employer's payroll.

Refund timing depends on your employer’s payroll process, so we recommend reaching out to your benefits or payroll team for specific timing.

Will I be reminded to complete this process?

Yes. You will receive weekly reminders to complete your onboarding application, along with additional notifications as the 90-day deadline approaches.

To begin receiving HSA contributions and avoid account closure, follow the steps outlined in the reminder emails to complete your HSA onboarding application.

Will I lose access to my account after it’s closed?

You’ll still be able to log in and view your HSA workspace, but your account will be labeled as closed, and you won’t be able to complete onboarding or receive contributions.

What happens if I enroll in an HSA again in the future?

If you enroll in an HSA again in a future plan year, you’ll receive a new onboarding window to complete your account setup.

Can I get an extension beyond 90 days?

At this time, the 90-day onboarding window cannot be extended. We recommend completing onboarding as soon as possible to avoid account closure.

What should I do if I'm having trouble completing onboarding?

If you’re having trouble completing onboarding, please reach out to Benepass Support before your 90-day deadline.

When contacting support, please include a screenshot and a brief description of the issue so we can help you resolve it as quickly as possible.
