When a merchant processes a refund for a purchase made with your Benepass card, the funds will automatically return to your benefit balance once processed by the merchant and card networks, typically within 7-10 business days
Why?
Refunds follow the same process as any credit card refund, going through merchant and banking systems before reaching your account. Understanding this process helps set expectations for when you'll see refunded amounts.
Refunds can appear in two ways:
- A credit amount equal to the refund
- The reversal of the original transaction
Refunds will return to the balance they were initiated from. Once the funds return to your balance, they are subject to the same status and schedule, including upcoming expirations, as the rest of the benefit's funds.
Example
If you make purchase for take-out from a restaurant, then call to cancel your order, the merchant may reverse your original transaction, resulting in the initial charge being removed from your account entirely.
If you make a purchase for office supplies, then initiate a return after it delivers, the merchant may issue a credit to you for the amount of your owed refund.
Common questions
What happens if I leave my current employer?
In most cases, refunds that process after termination are forfeited. For benefits configured with a grace or run-out period, refunds will be accessible until the point of expiration.
How long does it take for refunds to process?
Typically, refunds process in 7-10 business days once they've been confirmed by the merchant. In some cases, refunds may take longer if they are dependent on the return of purchased items.
Will my refund expire?
Refunded amounts are added back to your available balance and follow your regular benefit expiration rules. You will have until the next scheduled expiration to use your funds.
