Refunds

How do merchant refunds work while employed and post-termination?

Your Benepass card works much like any other Visa card, so refunds are processed through the merchant. The refund should show up in your account within a few business days, depending on the merchant's processing speed.

Once your refund has processed, funds will return to your account, increasing the remaining balance. In some cases, a refund might process after monthly funds have expired, boosting your funds for the following month.

Once a refund has been approved by the merchant, it typically takes 10 business days for the refund to be processed over the card networks and hit your account. If you don’t see your refund in your account within two weeks, please reach out to Support by clicking on "Submit a request" in the top right corner of this page and someone from our team will help you out.

Merchant Refund Post-Termination

If you recently left your employer and you are expecting a merchant refund, those funds will still land in the Benepass account.

  • Refund for a perk benefit (i.e. LSA, Wellness, etc.): Most perk benefits are deactivated upon termination, therefore, you wouldn't be able to use those and they will be forfeited to your employer. If you know you will receive a refund after your termination, you can give your employer a heads-up as they may want to return those funds either through us or in their own way.
  • Refund for a pre-tax benefit (i.e. Health FSA, Dependent Care FSA, etc.): Most pre-tax benefits have either a runout period or grace period upon termination for a preset number of days. This will depend on how each employer sets up their benefits.
    • Runout period refund: If you received a refund during a runout period, the funds will be put back in your Benepass and you can use them only on outstanding expenses incurred while you were still employed.
    • Grace period refund: If you received a refund during a grace period, the funds will be put back in your Benepass card and you can use them on both new eligible expenses or outstanding expenses incurred while you were still employed.
