Using your card 101

Which benefit balance will my transaction use?

Benepass uses AI to determine what benefit your purchase is most likely to fall under. Here are a few things our card takes into consideration as it decides how to classify your purchase:

  • Where you made the purchase from — Starbucks is likely not going to go into the same category as Home Depot, unless your benefit is really flexible
  • How the vendor bills across our network — all vendors are assigned a certain merchant code by Visa, which tells us the approximate sector that vendor belongs to
  • How much money you have left to spend under each benefit

Based on all of the information above, our card will take an educated guess as to which of your benefits you’re trying to use.

For people with 1-2 benefits, our system can often guess with relative accuracy. For people with 3+ benefits, it’s not uncommon for a purchase to be misclassified, especially if you buy something from a vendor that sells a wide range of products, like Target or Amazon.

If something is classified incorrectly feel free to reclassify it yourself or, if you are having any issues trying to reclassify, you can click on "Submit a request" in the top right corner of this page and someone from our support team will help you out.
