If you've been issued multiple cards, or if you have multiple benefits, you may be confused about which card to use for specific benefits. Here's how to find out which card to use for each benefit:
Steps
- From the desktop or mobile app, navigate to the Accounts page
- Select any benefit
- Click the "View overview" dropdown menu and select "Payment methods"
What to expect
Once expanded, you'll see the card(s) available to spend from for this benefit balance. Clicking on a card from that view will take you directly to the card details page, where you'll be able to view the card number, expiration, billing address, and other relevant details.
Common questions
Why do I have multiple cards?
If card spending is allowed under your benefits program, you will always see at least one card in your account by default - a virtual card. Scrolling down on the mobile app or to the left on the desktop app will reveal additional physical cards that have been ordered to your account. These cards will have different numbers but can be used interchangeably.
You may also have been issued multiple card types - perhaps a Benepass card and a Flex card, that are intended to be used for different benefits. Use the steps above to determine which card should be used for which benefit.
If you see a physical card listed in your app that you do not have in your possession, please cancel it by clicking into the card details, scrolling down, and clicking "Report lost or stolen." The card will be immediately canceled.
My card was declined
You may still encounter a card decline, even when using the right card for your benefit. To understand why your card declined, please view the transaction for more details, check your email for a decline notice, or read more here: Why did my transaction get declined?
I used the wrong card
If you used the wrong card to complete a purchase, not to worry, this can usually be resolved simply.
First, it may be possible to reclassify purchases between benefits directly in your app. Check to see if you're able to move your purchase to the correct benefit by navigating to the transaction and looking for a pencil icon next to the benefit name.
If you're not able to reclassify yourself, please contact Benepass Support for next steps.
What are the differences between cards?
Virtual and physical cards
All cards issued by Benepass include both a virtual and physical option.
- Virtual cards are digital cards available immediately in your app, making them ideal for online purchases or situations where you need immediate access to your benefits.
- Physical cards can be requested at any time and are mailed to your address. Physical cards are primarily used for in-person transactions where contactless payments may not be accepted.
While the card numbers differ between your physical and virtual cards, they both draw from the same benefit balances, giving you flexibility in how you access your funds.
Benepass, Flex, and HSA cards
Each type of card serves a specific purpose in your benefits program.
- The Benepass card has a white background with pink, purple, and blue line swirls. It can be used for all kinds of benefits, and may be the only card issued to you, or issued in tandem with a Flex or HSA card.
- The Flex card has a dark purple background with a pink and blue gradient swoosh detail. It is enriched with IIAS technology, which makes it a popular choice for pretax benefits such as FSAs, as well as some lifestyle or commuter benefits.
- The HSA card has a dark purple background with a pink and yellow gradient swoosh. It is a separate card dedicated solely to accessing your Health Savings Account funds for qualified medical expenses. It cannot be used for any other benefit purchases.
