How to change your pre-tax benefit elections

Benepass does not manage the enrollment process for making pre-tax elections.

You are not able to update or change your pre-tax elections within the Benepass platform.

For any changes to your pre-tax elections, please login to the employee portal where you initially made elections, or contact your HR or People teams for additional support

Once the updated election is received, Benepass will process all necessary changes to your account and balances.

Read on for more information about what to consider when making changes to your pre-tax benefit elections.

What to consider

Eligibility

Your ability to update pre-tax elections varies by benefit type.

  • Health Savings Account elections can be changed anytime during the year
  • FSAs (DCFSA, HCFSA, LPFSA) can generally only be changed following a qualifying life event
  • Commuter benefits can typically be updated month-to-month

Qualifying life events

In order to make changes to your FSA elections mid-year, you typically must have undergone one or more of the following events:

  • Changes in marital status
  • Changes in number of tax dependents
  • Changes in employment affecting health insurance benefits
  • Changes in eligibility for you or dependents
  • Death of a spouse/dependent

Your eligibility to enroll in an HSA may also change mid-year due to a life event, such as moving to disqualifying healthcare coverage.

Annual contribution limits

In some cases, you may need to adjust your HSA election to account for lump sum or other non-payroll contributions and ensure you do not exceed the annual contribution limit. Refer to current year contribution limits and adjust accordingly. Excess contributions may be subject to tax penalties or fees.
