Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

What FSA purchases are eligible?

Each FSA covers specific categories of expenses: Health Care FSAs cover a broad range of medical expenses, Limited Purpose FSAs cover dental and vision care, and Dependent Care FSAs cover qualified childcare and adult dependent care services.

FSA purchase eligibility is determined by IRS regulations to ensure these tax-advantaged accounts are used for qualified healthcare and dependent care costs.

Eligible Health Care FSA purchases

A Health Care FSA covers medical, dental, and vision expenses for you and your eligible dependents. This includes:

  • doctor visit copays
  • prescription medications
  • medical equipment
  • lab fees
  • medical procedurs

Eligible Dependent Care FSA purchases

The Dependent Care FSA covers care services that allow you and your spouse to work, look for work, or attend school full-time. For children under 13 or adult dependents, this includes:

  • Daycare or preschool
  • Before/after school care
  • Summer day camps
  • Nanny services
  • Adult daycare
  • In-home care services.

Funds cannot be used to pay for school tuition, extracurricular activities or lessons, or overnight camps. Medical care for eligible dependents is also not eligible under the Dependent Care FSA.

What if I'm not sure an item or service is eligible?

Before purchasing, it's best to confirm eligibility by checking your benefit's policy in the app, or using a reputable source, like the lists linked in this article. Keep in mind, not every item that calls itself "FSA Eligible" is actually eligible! In some cases, items or services may only be eligible if they've been specifically recommended or prescribed by your physician.
