When opening a Health Savings Account (HSA) with Benepass, additional documentation may be required in accordance with the bank's Customer Identification Program (CIP) for extra security verification.
Why?
Under the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), institutions must verify the identity of all customers before transactions may occur. In some cases, verifying your identity may require additional supporting documents.
You may be asked to verify three kinds of personal information: address, personal ID, or Social Security.
What documents are accepted?
Address verification
To verify your current address, you must provide one of the following:
- utility bill
- bank statement
- lease agreement
- current pay stub
PO Boxes or private mail boxes (PMB) are not accepted.
Personal ID verification
To verify your personal ID, you must provide a photo (front and back) of a current government-issued ID showing your full legal name. Accepted forms of ID include:
- driver's license
- state ID
- passport
Please note that scans or photocopies of these documents will not be accepted. Only original photos will be reviewed.
Social Security verification
To verify your Social Security number, you must provide a copy of one of the following:
- Social Security card
- most recent tax return
Please note that scans or photocopies of these documents will not be accepted. Only original photos will be reviewed.
Common questions
How will I know if I need to provide additional documents?
Benepass Support will contact you directly to request specific documentation from your if your application requires it. Benepass will only contact you from email addresses ending in @getbenepass.com. If you have any concerns about the validity of a received request for documentation, please contact Benepass Support separately and directly to confirm the request.
How do I upload my documents securely?
When prompted by Benepass Support, you'll be able to upload the required documents to our secure file dropbox. You'll be asked to sign in with the email associated with your account to do so.
The verification process is manual, which means that your documents will not be automatically processed once uploaded. Once your files have been uploaded, please confirm with your Benepass Support contact so that they may proceed with the required next steps with the bank.
I haven't had to provide documents before, why now?
For the most part, bank CIP protocols are opaque to customers, so it may not always be clear why you are being asked for documents when prior banking interactions did not require it. In most cases, it is simply an additional security threshold to verify your information, and may be more likely to happen when important details about you have recently changed, such as a change in address or last name.
