Pre-Tax Benefits 101

Tips for Using Your Flex Card: What to Know at Different Merchants

What is the Benepass Flex card?

The Benepass Flex card is a benefits card powered by enriched merchant data. This card receives more data from the merchant when you make pre-tax purchases, and can distinguish between eligible and non-eligible items. If the merchant tells us that the purchase is pre-tax eligible, a receipt will not be required. If the merchant does not provide information indicating that the purchase is eligible, the transaction will decline.

Flex cards are powered by the Inventory Information Approval System (IIAS) which relies on internal merchant systems that are accurate and up to date. While merchants are always working to improve their IIAS systems, there are a few important things to keep in mind when using your Flex card. This guide will help you understand what to expect and how to confidently use your card for eligible purchases.

Using Your Flex Card at Popular Merchants

Target

In-Store: Flex cards are widely accepted in Target's physical stores when making eligible purchases.
Online: Target.com does not support IIAS technology. Purchases attempted with your Flex card may decline, even if the items are eligible.

Walmart

PIN information: Walmart will request a PIN in order to complete a transaction. You are able to bypass the PIN prompt by choosing "Other" on the card reader and selecting "Sign for purchase."

Pharmacy Checkout: The pharmacy is the most reliable place to use your Flex card at Walmart locations.

Self-Checkout: Self-checkout terminals do not support IIAS technology, please use a checkout with a cashier.

Mobile Wallet: Walmart does not accept tap-to-pay or mobile wallet payments for Flex card purchases. Please use your physical card directly.

Costco

Pharmacy Checkout: The best place to use your Flex card is directly at Costco pharmacy.

Standard Checkout: Flex card is unavailable at other registers.

Mobile Wallet: Costco does not accept tap-to-pay or mobile wallet payments (even at pharmacy registers). Please plan to use your physical card.

Summary

For a smooth experience, we recommend using your physical Flex card at the pharmacy checkout with a live representative whenever possible. This tends to work best for healthcare-related purchases at all these merchants and is where vendors have the most up-to-date IIAS technology in their point-of-sales systems.
