What is a post-deductible Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA)?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Overview

A post-deductible Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) is a benefit that requires you to meet your health plan deductible before you can spend your funds.

Your employer can still contribute funds to your HRA while spending is locked, but you won't be able to use them until you submit documentation showing that your deductible has been met.

Why is my spending locked?

If you’re enrolled in a post-deductible HRA, you may see:

  • A lock icon next to your benefit balance

  • A message on your Home or Accounts page saying spending is locked

This means your employer requires proof that you’ve met your deductible before HRA funds can be used.

Even though spending is locked, your HRA can still receive contributions during this time.

How do I unlock my HRA funds?

To unlock spending, you’ll need to submit a short form in the Benepass app.

You’ll be asked to provide:

  • Proof that you’ve met your deductible (such as an Explanation of Benefits or insurer statement)

  • The date you met your deductible

To submit the HRA form:

  1. Go to the Home page or Accounts page and select the card that says your benefit requires documentation

  2. Open your post-deductible HRA account

  3. Select Submit documents and complete the form

Once submitted, your request will be reviewed by the Benepass team.

What happens after I submit the HRA form?

After you submit your documentation:

  • You’ll receive a confirmation that your submission has been received

  • Your submission will be reviewed

  • You’ll receive a notice once your request is approved or denied

If your request is approved, your HRA spending will be unlocked and you can begin using your funds.

If your submission is denied, you can update your documentation and resubmit.

Where can I check my HRA submission status?

You can view the status of your HRA submission prior to approval at any time. To view your submission status:

  1. Open your post-deductible HRA from the Accounts page

  2. Select View submissions to see pending, approved, or denied requests

When can I start spending my HRA funds?

You’ll be able to use your HRA funds once your submission is approved. To be eligible, your expense must have a service date on or after the date you met your deductible.

Note: The service date is the date care was received, which may be different from the date you paid.
